I need some verification about 50in. HDTV?

I’m going to get a 50in. HDTV. So far, I’ve heard Plasma for 42in. and over. LCD for less than 42in. The reason was that plasma is cheaper than lcd and at 50in. the quality will be the same. Does anybody else agree?

Next question. Is 1080p better than 1080i? I’ve heard that 1080p is much smoother since it’s progressive.

Lastly, it appears that Panasonic is the way to go for a 50in. plasma. They seem to be getting the best ratings at that size. Can anybody else concur?
I heard it was 60,000 hours. That’s like 20+ years if it’s on for 8 hours a day. I’ll definately by at least one more tv in the next 20 years.

I will answer your question in the point of view of an electronics engineer:
    1. Plasma TV is still the best TV technology to date. It is just that LCDs features and advantages are being pushed for better market acceptance. A lot of plasma myths have been proven otherwise. Go get a 50 in plasma especially if your intention is to set up a home theater system.
    2. 1080p is better than 1080i for the reason you have stated. I interlaced means that the video scanning is interlaced (or interweaved) which is a means of "fooling" the naked eye. 1080p is a more realistic scanning technology.
    3. Panasonic has been producing great TVs, and so as other brands. However, in choosing any electronics device, go for brands that are well-known like panasonic.
20 or so years for a TVs lifetime is already long enough for another better technology to come. In wg\hich case, you are right, you’d purchase a new TV by then!
    I hope that helps.

All i can tell you is to NOT get a plasma

the lights inside must be changed every 50,000 hours or something like

    LCD’s are best

Wow I wouldnt listen to the first person, there is NOTHING to charge in a plasma (never has and never will be). Panasonic makes a great plasma, the one you have read about is the "60U". This model has too much artifacting (stray pixels) around some some signals. For this I would consider the "600U" to help with this. As for the 1080P there are only 2 plasma models out there, a 50" Pioneer Elite for 10K and the Panasonic for around 8K. Check the "native resolutions" on the plasma you are considering as a 1080i can look incredible on a plasma with a good connection like HDMI.

Personally, I would go with DLP — its cheaper and lasts longer.

As for 1080i vs. p, there will be some difference…not a lot

You’ll never see 1080p broadcast so why bother buying it. 1080p takes up about the equivalent of 8 channels of 1080i. Satellite and cable companies can’t afford to give up the bandwidth.

Further the eye is a marvelous thing, especially coupled to the human brain. IT can play all kinds of tricks on us. If someone has an eye that can discern between 1080p and 1080i they’re full of it!
